I also believe programming is important … in the right context, for some people. But so are a lot of skills. I would no more urge everyone to learn programming than I would urge everyone to learn plumbing.”

-
Jeff Atwood, “Please Don’t Learn To Code” (via evan)

I learned to program (in part, at least) for the same reason that I’ve gone on sales calls, learned to read a P&L, put together marketing plans, and — yes — learned to do some basic plumbing.

Other people are better at all of these things that I am, but having a basic understanding allows me to communicate with those people more effectively and intelligently, and also avoid bothering those people with the really stupid questions.

While I’m probably too much of a generalist for my own good, I nevertheless believe that having this kind of broad understanding of a variety of topics is important.

Cloud Nothings - Stay Useless

I made the same mistake as Jen, and avoided this record until a friend pushed it into my dropbox. Learn from our wrong-headedness. Listen, now.

chewablevitamins:

Cloud Nothings - Stay Useless

When an album hits the hype cycle and an artist is suddenly everyone’s SXSW pick and everyone’s band of the moment, sometimes I can’t even listen to it. I’ll admit that I steered clear of the new Cloud Nothings album because the swells of praise were too loud.

Well, that was a mistake. This is probably the best album of the year so far. Perfect pop punk that invokes both the Strokes and Minor Threat. You wouldn’t be wrong to call them brethren in arms with Japandroids and Fucked Up. Attack On Memory is raw and alive. Even “Wasted Days,” at almost 9 minutes, is driving and urgent with the repeating chorus “I thought I would be more than this.” It’s hard to listen outside the context of today’s political and socioeconomic shit show.

“No Future/No Past” is straight out of the Slint playbook, and is the first track that drew me in. But “Stay Useless” is the centerpiece, so I’ve shared that here.

Attack On Memory on Spotify, Amazon, iTunes. Also check out their performance on KEXP.

While there was a bit of a fish/barrel thing going on that left me feeling guilty about how easy the mocking was (and Microsoft apparently put together a pretty decent device by 2009). it was a still pleasant way to pass the time.

But now the truth comes out. According to former Microsoft executive Robbie Bach, the Zune’s problem was that the music industry didn’t support it.

That’s right — it wasn’t the ill-conceived marketing campaign that launched the device, the tepid response from the press, the crippled banner feature it offered, or the one-two punch of the iPod Shuffle in 2006 and iPhone in 2007.

It was the music industry.

Bastards.

Happy Monday (Taken with picplz.)

Happy Monday (Taken with picplz.)

Broken Water - Underground
