Seems to fit: just going by eye, if you yank out the big concurrent spikes coming from joelaz’ last.fm top 5 Tumblr users you get all three bands getting a year-end “best of” post boost; then moving into 2009 Bon Iver’s EP (reasonably well reviewed) and Animal Collective’s full album (orgasmically well reviewed) pull their trendlines correspondingly higher than Fleet Foxes (the only one without an early 2009 release).

I knew these three bands were popular on Tumblr, but I’m fascinated to see that their mentions largely rise and fall together. I suppose some of it could be due to overall rises and falls in posting volumes from day to day, but I doubt that explains all of it.
Marc, it looks like the big spikes in this graph coincide with the days that my automated Last.fm Tumblr feed updated for all the people who import their favorite artists into Tumblr each week. I have no idea how many people use the feed, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they skew trend data for all band names.
Somewhat related, why doesn’t Tumblr search show any audio posts?
