In my head when I woke up this morning, probably a side effect of having written this shortly before going to sleep. Adding to the immense list of things that I would like Foursquare to do: it’d be great if I could get a notification when one of my friends adds a new venue.
Basically, I want a feed of the interesting new restaurants that I haven’t heard about yet, and I would like my friends to do the research for me. Not sure it’d work, but there’s something interesting to be uncovered around what venues aren’t already in existence in Foursquare’s view of NYC.
The weakness here is that in New York information is the most important currency there is: no matter how much money you have or how famous you are, just knowing about places and events that others don’t know about is the measure of cool. Calvin Trillin wrote about this phenomenon for restaurants about 30 years ago, and it still holds true. Are people going to check in at their wonderful unknown find? Hm.
