I Tried To Watch Game Of Thrones...

Hollywood’s core piracy “problem” is perfectly captured in this one cartoon by The Oatmeal.

In fact, I’ve had this exact debate with myself. I really want to watch Game of Thrones. But I’m not an HBO subscriber because I’m not a cable subscriber and unfortunately, the two go hand-in-hand, no matter what I’m willing to pay.

I sympathize with this line of thinking, but HBO is not the worst offender at all. HBO is $12 a month. That’s $120 a year. That’s probably a bit steep for a blu ray box set of one show, but it’s perfectly reasonable for 2 season-long blu ray box sets. And for that $12 a month you get HBOGo, which is awesome, and let’s you watch every single HBO show streaming, on demand, whenever you want it, in HD.

@rickwebb not exactly - given you have to be a digital cable sub in 98% of locales to qualify for the privilege of paying $12-15/month plus taxes your cost isnt 12-15, it is more like $60-65/month if you aren’t already a cable sub. $720 a year for HBO is nuts.

This is exactly it for me. I cancelled our cable this weekend; we were getting the cheapest, lamest, $15/mo package, but — of course — that $15 package actually cost about $50/mo when all was said and done.

We’re starting out with a $50 Roku (which has the benefit of actually costing $50), and over the next few months we’ll figure out what our long-term solution will be. But I’m pretty certain it won’t involve cable.

If any of you have a non-cable setup you particularly like, let me know.
