The main question I have is whether Twitter’s “focus on mass appeal” is actually doing anything much for the company. If Twitter, or its API, were consistently up right now I’d put together a script to see how many of Oprah or Kutcher’s followers have posted a tweet 30 days or more after their registration.
That celebrities generate a lot of passing traffic I can’t question, but I’m not at all convinced that it gains Twitter the company much of anything in the long term. There are companies that can make a business of heavy ephemeral traffic with low user retention, but I’m not convinced that Twitter is one of them.
I can’t speak to what Tumblr or its investors see as their route forward [for the crass among us let’s call it their “exit”], but my gut is that “biggest blogging tool in the market” doesn’t factor in. Making a wild guess right now, I’d say that a relatively small but extremely active (like, say, nearly a million posts in a single day) and (arguably) influence-y, tastemaker-y user base is likely to end up looking like a nice acquisition target if they can stay the course.
That said, though…yeah, josephweisenthal’s tumblarity is probably fucked. Sorry, dude.

Hey, Look What Tumblr’s Done With All Its Money
Looks like Tumblr is getting taken down 4-5 pegs today. Wonder what will happen to The Stalwart’s tumblarity…

Oh shit. I didn’t think about that.
