December 2011
Hoping that this is the year we get back to Pratt for the New Year’s Eve steam-powered extravaganza.

As I used the app more and more, something surprising happened: I became increasingly observant of the world around me. Walking to the subway the other day, I spotted a backhoe parked on a corner and got curious—what could I do with that? Presto: Hefe helped me turn it into the dirty claw of a weary dragon. Later that day, a filtered snap of my living-room floor revealed how it...

Another link to my latest blog post. Because I haven’t been writing much, so I’ve got to link-whore it up when I do.

Presidential Candidate Ron Paul Slams SOPA | TorrentFreak

Not particularly surprising, given Paul’s general opposition to federal “interference” of virtually any kind.
Now if he’d just change his positions on civil...

Bon Jovi - Runaway (posted in April)
Reblogged from David Noel. For a period in the early to mid-1980s, there was a stream of music — and Bon Jovi was the epitome — that made me feel like I was somehow missing out by not living in the suburbs.
On the street...

Being some thoughts after reading Fred Wilson’s The Big Five of Social Media and Mocked and Misunderstood. With thanks and apologies to Redcliffe N. Salaman, author of a fantastic book.
Shortly after Fred posted the two items linked above (both of which you should check now if you haven’t already), I found myself with a couple of hours of driving time in a car full of sleeping...
Anomaly? No. The same can be said of almost the whole of major-label rock these...
– Rock in 2011 - Hot Chelle Rae, Foster the People, Chevelle - NYTimes.com
At this point it hardly even seems worth criticizing the major labels’ output. They’re still chasing hits, and the most reliable way to get a hit is still to promote (a) artists that have already had hits, or (b)...

The Pixies - La La Love You (Posted in November)
Listening to this again I thought at first that I didn’t have much to say about it; then I realized that I actually didn’t need to say much about it, and those are two very different things.
A tangent: I’m...

The Beach Boys - God Only Knows (Posted in October)
A post from one of the first days of autumn. To expand on my note from the original post: in my view, the Beach Boys aren’t really a fun, sun, and good times band.
Even at their most apparently cheerful they’re already casting a nostalgic eye...

Buddy Holly & The Crickets - Not Fade Away (Posted in September)
To digress: one of the things that I love about Tumblr is that it’s defined by each user: my experience of Tumblr is mine alone, and it probably bears only the most superficial resemblance to yours.
Even so, it gives me hope for the future of...

Day one of the top 20 list that you and I put together:
Howe Gelb - A Band of Gypsies (Posted in April)
A newspeedwayboogie reblog. I have a theory that Howe Gelb has a secret plan to exceed Robert Pollard’s recorded output by eventually collaborating with every other musician on earth. If true, I support his goal.
Turtle Ambulance - Cubienta (Posted in December)
I love that this song...
Us vs. 2011: A Top 20 List
My take on the matter is that the year-end “top” list is an excuse to revisit the art in question: you listen to the records, watch the movies, or flip through the books that made up your year.
One can put a lot of birds on the final product to make it pretty, but I think the process of building the list is still the coolest part.
In that spirit, I’m actually making a top 20...
